From DJ to eJay
An interview with DJ Carl
Cox
Heralded by music
critics and fans alike as one of the best DJs in the world, Carl Cox is
known for his soulful techno mix selections and signature 3-deck
technique. What's less well known is his foray into the business of
music as Director of dance-music Web site and software company eJay.com.
EJay.com makes DIY music software such as
Ibiza eJay,
Dance eJay 3 and
eJay Sound Collection 5 which allow users to mix and create
tracks on a PC, without expensive DJ equipment. Here, Cox talks to
Halfvalue.co.uk about eJay, club culture and his favourite tunes.
Halfvalue.co.uk: Why did you get involved with eJay?
Carl Cox: Dance music is obviously my passion, and I like the
way that eJay opens the dance world up to everyone. It means that
would-be DJs can make music at home on the PC without needing expensive
decks or studio equipment. It's the only thing I've come across that
makes the world of dance music accessible to all.
Halfvalue.co.uk: Do you use a PC in your work? Do you play
computer games?
Cox: I use eJay, obviously. When I get time to play
games, the
PlayStation is my favourite console. I love
Driver 2!
Halfvalue.co.uk: Apart from eJay, what else are you up
to at the moment?
Cox: I'm in my studio working on my new album, which is as
yet untitled. It's due out in April or May 2001.
Halfvalue.co.uk: If your house was on fire which records
would you grab first?
Cox: All my 7" records.
Halfvalue.co.uk: If the numbers are dwindling on the dance
floor, which records do you reach for?
Cox:
Black Lace--Agadoo
Halfvalue.co.uk: What are your top 5 all-time classic
floorfillers?
Cox:
Gloria Gaynor, I Will Survive
Diana Ross, Love Hangover
The Isley Brothers, Harvest for the World
Stevie Wonder, As
Soul Sonic Force,Planet Rock
Halfvalue.co.uk: What's the best night you've ever played at?
Cox: There are too many to mention. But if I had to choose,
it would have to be Glastonbury 1995.
Halfvalue.co.uk: Which DJ's do you rate?
Cox:
Laurent Garnier,
Sven Vath,
Danny Tenaglia,
Darren Emerson,
Jeff Mills,
Richie Hawtin... (the list goes on).
Halfvalue.co.uk: Ibiza, Ayia Napa, New York or Manchester?
Which one and why?
Cox: Ibiza. I've been going since 1985 and seen such a big
development in club culture on one small island that there is simply
nothing like it in the world.
Halfvalue.co.uk: Being a DJ, and therefore something of an
arbiter of style and taste, there still must be some horrors lurking in
the dark recesses of your record collection--anything to declare? The
Birdie Song?
Cox: I have to put my hands up to owning
Rod Stewart,
Milli Vanilli, and--as I said earlier--I do have Agadoo. (The
Shame!)
Halfvalue.co.uk: Where do you see club culture heading?
Cox: In one way or another, club culture has always been
around. At the moment, it seems to be reaching everyone all over the
world, creating a world culture. I have no idea where it will end up.
Halfvalue.co.uk: What five CDs or records topped your
Christmas 2000 list?
Cox:
Rui de Silva feat Cassandra, Touch Me
Hatiras, Spaced Invader (all mixes)
Ben Sims, Remanipulator Remixes
Sven Vath, L'Esperanza
Apollo 440, Charlie's Angels
Halfvalue.co.uk: What are your tips for budding DJs?
Cox: To all DJs: Believe in what you're playing and enjoy
yourself. I got where I am because of these beliefs... and a little bit
of luck.
